Racing Yacht "America"

This is a model of the racing yacht "America" She is the yacht that one the first America's Cup Race (then called the One Hundred Sovereign Cup) in England in 1857. The "America" had several lives. She smuggled Confederate spys into England during the Civil War. After the Civil War she was used as a training ship. In 1873 she returned to "yachting" in private ownership. She eventually ended up in a shed at the US Naval Academy and was crushed beyond repair when the shed collapsed under snow in 1942.
